Embossed Leather Explained: Croc, Lizard and Ostrich — What's the Difference?

When I tell people we make shoes in embossed croc, lizard and ostrich leather, I often get one of two reactions. The first is immediate enthusiasm. They've heard of these leathers and want to know more. The second is wariness, are these real exotic animal skins?

Let me answer the second question first: no. Embossed leather is bovine leather, regular calfskin or cowhide that has been pressed with a textured die to replicate the pattern of a different skin. The croc scales, the lizard grain, the ostrich dots. These are embossed into the surface of the leather using heat and pressure.

No crocodile, lizard or ostrich is involved in the process. The result is a leather that has the look and much of the tactile quality of an exotic skin, without the ethical and legal complications.

Croc embossed: the one people recognise first

Crocodile embossed leather has the most immediately recognisable pattern. The wide, rectangular scales arranged in a grid that's become one of the most iconic textures in fashion.

At Millwoods, we offer croc embossed in Tan and Black. The Tan Croc is a versatile work shoe. The warm tone and polished texture sit comfortably in professional environments without feeling stuffy. The Black Croc is a winter-transition hero: dark, textured, and genuinely interesting without being distracting.

The scale pattern on croc embossed is deep and defined. You can feel it as much as you can see it. Run your fingers across the surface and the texture is unmistakable.

Lizard embossed: fine-grain and underestimated

Lizard embossed leather has a much finer, more delicate scale pattern than croc. Where croc scales are wide and geometric, lizard scales are small and organic-looking, almost like a mosaic viewed from a distance.

This makes lizard embossed one of the more quietly sophisticated leathers we work with. From across a room, it reads as interesting texture without being immediately identifiable. Up close, the detail is extraordinary.

Our Navy and Cream Lizard Square Toe Ballet Flat is the best example of what this leather can do. The two-tone colourway, navy base with cream highlights in the scale valleys makes the pattern visible in a way that single-colour lizard doesn't always achieve.

Ostrich embossed: the unexpected one

Of the three, ostrich is the one people least expect to love. The pattern is different from both croc and lizard. Instead of scales, ostrich leather is characterised by small raised dots or quill follicle marks across the surface. It's a gentler, rounder texture.

In Cream, which is how we make our Ostrich Square Toe Ballet Flat, the follicle pattern is subtle. The leather has a beautiful softness that doesn't announce itself. It's the kind of shoe that people notice without being entirely sure why.

Ostrich embossed also tends to feel slightly softer than croc or lizard embossed, because the pattern is shallower and the leather's own natural softness comes through more.

Which one is right for you?

If you want presence and polish: Tan or Black Croc. It's the most defined, most immediately luxurious-looking of the three.

If you want something sophisticated and a little unexpected: Navy Lizard. It's the choice of someone who knows what they're looking at.

If you want texture without drama: Cream Ostrich. It's the most wearable, most versatile, and the one that will earn the most compliments from people who aren't sure why they're complimenting it.
