Why I Finally Made a Boat Shoe

Millwoods Why I Finally Made leather flat shoes Australia

I've been making shoes for 8 years now (Wow that has gone quickly). And for most of that time, when someone asked me about a Boat Shoe, I said no.

Not because I don't like them. I do. But because Millwoods has always been about making things I believe in deeply. Shapes that earn their place, leathers that age well, silhouettes that don't look dated in three years. And for a long time, I wasn't sure a Boat Shoe was that.

The question I kept asking myself

The Boat Shoe has been a trend piece for so long. It surges in popularity every few years, then recedes. I didn't want to make something that my customers would wear enthusiastically for one season and then quietly push to the back of the wardrobe.

So I kept watching. And what I noticed, gradually, was that the women in my life who wore Boat Shoes, really wore them, every day, for years weren't treating them like a trend. They were treating them like a staple. Farm to lunch. Market to meeting. The kind of shoe you don't have to think about because it's always the right answer.

That's when I started to think differently about it.

Why kid suede changed everything

The traditional Boat Shoe is made in rough leather. Practical, hardwearing, originally designed for yacht decks. It's a good material. But it's not a Millwoods material.

When I started working on the design, I tried it in kid suede. And it changed the whole character of the shoe.

Kid suede is the softest suede we work with. It's lighter than regular suede, finer in texture, and it has a warmth to it that rough leather simply doesn't. On a Boat Shoe, it makes the silhouette feel less utilitarian and more considered. Less deck, more life.

We made it in three colours. Dusty Pink, because I wanted something that felt genuinely new. Ecru, because there should always be a version that goes with everything. And Dark Green, because I couldn't help myself.

What makes the Millwoods Boat Shoe different

Beyond the leather, the Millwoods Boat Shoe has everything that goes into every shoe we make. A sole with real flex and construction that holds its shape rather than collapsing after a few months of wear.

It's also available only in small batches. As you are now used to we don't overproduce. When we run out of a colour, that's it until we can source the leather again. It's not a scarcity tactic, it's just how we work.

Who it's for

It's for the woman who needs a shoe that moves through her whole day without asking anything of her. Comfortable enough to wear from morning to evening. Good enough to walk straight into wherever she's going.

The woman who, like me, spent a long time saying she didn't need a Boat Shoe. And then put one on and immediately understood why she did.
